Development of Supercapacitors with Carbon Based Nanomaterials Produced by Induction Coupled Plasma System

Supercapacitors, alias electric double layer capacitors have attracted great attention. The reason for this is that they have higher power density, higher energy density and longer cycle life compared to batteries and conventional dielectric capacitors. Carbon based materials, especially the novel forms, such as graphene and carbon nano-onions are promising electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their superior conductivity, stability and high surface area. In this work, these materials will be synthesized using induction coupled plasma system (ICPS) in high yields.  ICPS is particularly chosen since the synthesis of these materials in large quantities is quite difficult with other known methods. Detailed materials characterization will be conducted following purification and modification procedures. These nanomaterials will be used as electrode active materials in supercapacitors and the electrochemical characteristics of these fabricated supercapacitors will be systematically investigated.
